 From the WAVES Ambulance Website:

In 1982, Upstate Medical University joined services with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department to create the Upstate Medical University Scene Medevac Team. This dual agency effort combined the roles of a Level 1 Trauma Center, with the use of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Air-1 Helicopter.  The mission of the Medevac Team is to provide immediate emergency medical care and transport to an appropriate medical facility for the critically injured or acutely ill patient.

WAVES has since partnered with Upstate Medical University to provide certified Flight Paramedics to provide the staffing of medical professionals on the helicopter.  Our paramedics at WAVES go through extensive training to be on the Flight Team and provide many life-saving treatments within minutes.  Our paramedics strive to provide the best, most up-to-date care possible.  Physicians often join the air-medical team on Air-1 during their Emergency Physician Residency Program at Upstate Medical University.

The Aviation Unit has one chief pilot, five pilot/deputies, three flight observer/deputies, and is often staffed by one of our Paramedics.  The helicopter used is a single-engine Bell 407, also known as “Air-1”, it is equipped with Night Sun (a light source capable of delivering 30 million candlepower), a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) device, and video downlink/videotaping capabilities.

Air-1 is a multi-mission helicopter capable of performing numerous functions including: Patrol-Search and Rescue-Medevac Services-Fire Assistance

Through the hard work of Dr. Fullagar the flight team recently began using a procedure called Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI). RSI uses multiple medications to assist the Paramedic is controlling the patient’s airway. This new tool is a major asset for flight crews and will make a difference in patient outcomes. WAVES is the first agency in Onondaga County to roll out RSI for it’s flight team.

WAVES Ambulance has now taken the ball and run with it by establishing the Air1 Foundation to see to it citizens in CNY are able to contribute to the fund and continue this valuable life saving operation.  Some people contend that having another medevac or state police chopper available in the CNY area might be redundant - exactly!  ICE promotes redundancy in preparation for emergencies. When these units are tied up in an emergency or maintenance or another disaster situation – who are they going to call call?    Air 1.

  1. Very impressed with the efforts to keep Air 1 doing exactly what we need it for. It a shame that this even has to be done, but with the efforts of the community and WAVES, I’m confident Air 1 will be able to continue servicing our people.

ICE4SAFETY is once again proud to help promote such a worthwhile lifesaving public service…. be sure you always carry an updated ICE Card or ICE Emergency Information Form using the ICE QR© Code Features…..simple & free!

I fully support this multi aspect operation. I served for 3 years providing medivac as a flight paramedic in the U.K and can wholeheartledly testify to the positive impact this unit can have for the communities it serves.
Support Air 1 now rather than find yourselves, or your loved ones in a situation where you ‘wish’ you had!
In terms of financial value; if you establish the cost to society of the loss of its citizen, through disability or life lost, research demonstrates that just dealing with 4-6 casualties per year can justify investments made.
Of course the impact is wider than for an individuals outcome, or that of financial matters; it also reduces emotional distress suffered by those whose loved ones are affected by their oft feeling of guilt – at not being empowered to have made a difference!
Air 1, ice4safety, our ICE friends around the world and myself, as founder and director of ICE – In Case of Emergency, all share a commonality in the difference we can make, for the benefit of all. Will you join us?

  4. There are an endless number of very worthy cause to which one can donate funds, however, my brother’s fiance’ is a Medivac Blackhawk driver (currently deployed) in Afghanistan and risks her life with every flight. As such, we have special place in our hearts for the Medivac crews such as Air 1. For that reason and as thanks for the ICE support of http://www.DoorDevil.com, we have donated $100 to AIR 1 Foundation. We truly applaud and appreciate your efforts and the service you provide.

Simply outstanding Nick…… Folks, this is an unsolicited and very generous donation to the Air 1 Foundation from the developers of the Door Devil security devices and for that we are most grateful! We also are extremely grateful for the selfless military service members of your family are providing to help keep us free! We cannot thank them enough….Bravo……
